Baltimore, MD (January 28, 2015) – Visit Baltimore, the official sales and marketing organization for Baltimore, has achieved level one certification in the ASTM (American Society for Testing and Materials) Standard pertaining to the Evaluation and Selection of Destinations for Environmentally Sustainable Meetings, Events, Trade Shows, and Conferences (APEX/ASTM). This destination standard is one of nine standards introduced in 2012 by the meetings, conventions, exhibitions and events industry to provide event planners and suppliers with specifications for producing events in a more sustainable manner.
“We are proud and excited to be the first Northeast destination to attain APEX/ASTM Destination certification,” said Tom Noonan, president and CEO of Visit Baltimore. “Certification to the industry’s global standard demonstrates our ongoing commitment to sustainability.”
The ASTM Destination Standard delineates the procedural requirements for destination selection – the practice of researching, evaluating and choosing the location for an event. The standard lists specific performance criteria for staff management, communications, waste management, energy, air quality, water, procurement and community partners. The standards were created in partnership with ASTM International, an ANSI-accredited standards development organization.
“Environmental responsibility is a top concern in the meeting industry right now,” said Michael Luehrs, president of the Green Meeting and Industry Council (GMIC), the nonprofit association that helped to found the ASTM Sustainable Meeting Standards. “We congratulate Visit Baltimore on this achievement and hope this will encourage others in the meetings and convention industry to pursue certification.”
iCompli, a division of BPA Worldwide, a nonprofit international auditing organization headquartered in Shelton, Connecticut, developed the certification protocols for the ASTM standards and performed the independent third-party certification of Visit Baltimore’s compliance with the destination standard. Glenn Hansen, CEO of BPA Worldwide, commented, "Our certification of the event sustainability standards driven by GMIC and now adopted by Visit Baltimore continues our long-standing partnership with the event industry to promote transparency.”
